2011 59th Annual Elkland Labor Day Tournament Results

NY Bombers and PA Power Crowned Co-Champions of Elkland Labor Day

Elkland, PA – After two great days of men’s fastpitch softball, Mother Nature reared the Cowanesque Valley with rain on Labor Day, halting the end of the 2011 Durk Sherman Classic Tournament in Elkland, PA.

Play ended Sunday night with two undefeated teams, the New York Bombers and the PA Power. The New York Bombers behind the pitching of Sean Kelly defeated Jeremy Manley and the Shaggy Dog Team 5-4 in 8 innings on Sunday night. Immediately following the game, the PA Power rode the strong pitching arm of Bryan Newton to a 7-0 victory over the Barhaven Broadway Blues.

Four other teams remained in the mix for Monday’s game, including I4C Victory, Kar’s Ace’s, Barhaven Broadway Blues, and the Shaggy Dog team. 25 of the 32 scheduled games were played beginning Friday night and ending Sunday evening.

Eastern Seaboard League Final Weekend

The Eastern Seaboard Fastpitch League finished itâ€™s inaugural season Sunday with Keatingâ€™s Fitness Center from Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania defeating Elite / Hoffman 8-2 in the Championship game of the playoffs. Keatingâ€™s broke open a 2-2 game in the 7th inning by scoring 6 runs.

Records were as follows: Keatingâ€™s 7-3; South Carolina Tornadoâ€™s 6-2 and the regular season champs; Elite / Hoffman 6-3-1; Virginia Aces 2-6-1; A.A. Courier 1-8.

The directors of the league and the teams that participated were very pleased with the facilities, the level of play and the organization that this new league provided. Plans are in the works to continue the league next year and build on the success of this past season. New teams will be welcome and the league is positioned to expand in 2012.

Swashbucklers win Jersey Shore Firecracker Invitational

The NY Swashbucklers went 3-0 in Round Robin play, before defeating the Bedford Merchants in the Semifinals 10-0 (no-hitter by Kenton Martin) and winning a classic 6-3 in extra innings against the PA Power to take the title. In the championship game, down to their last out and last strike in the top of the 7th, John Shreiber blasted a game-tying solo homerun to knot the score at 3-all. After stranding PA Power runners at 2nd and 3rd in the bottom of the 7th, the Swashbucklers opened up the game with 3 runs in the top of the 8th, 2 coming on a two-run triple by Mike Conigliaro. Martin shut down the Power in the bottom half of the inning, sealing the tournament for the Swash.

The Swashbucklers continue their season this weekend in Boston at the Ray Macone Memorial Open Fast Pitch Invitational and have two weeks off before wrapping up their season at the NSA Men’s Fastpitch World Series in early August.

Couple more weeks until the Erie PA tournament. Just a few reminders to fastball fans coming: 8 teams with 2 pools of 4. Top 6 advance to Sunday for a 1pm final. BallParkRadio and Al Doran are scheduled to be in attendance.

Erie Airport is the closest and most convenient (USAir, Continental, and Delta all come straight into Erie). Buffalo, Pittsburgh and Cleveland are all about 1.5 hours from Erie.

Admission to games is free. Erie is a very old fashioned ballpark with no gates to charge. There are no "open container" laws at the park so, you can bring beer to the bleachers with you. If you're traveling to the ballpark and want an address for your GPS, use this one: 1137 East 11th Street, Erie PA.

Schedule will be made in a day or so. Right now these teams are committed: Jarvis, Chi/NY, Albaugh, Midland, California A's, PA Power, Ashland, and Bakersfield Silverhawks.

There will be 50-50's and local concessions for burgers and stuff.

Fastball fans from as far as Texas and Wisconsin are scheduled to appear, along with many familiar faces of the die-hard fans we all know.

Results of Eastern Seaboard Inaugural Weekend.

The first weekend of play in the Eastern Seaboard Fastpitch League has been completed at historic Lyons Field in Pennsylvania. Five teams went head to head in the round robin format. Leading the league standings is the Elite/Hoffman team from Pa. who finished the weekend a perfect 4-0. Coming in second was the veteran team from South Carolina, the Tornados at 3-1. Coming in third was the Keating Fitness team from Wilkes Barre Pa who lost two close games to the number 1 and 2 teams. Rounding out the pack was AA Courier from Philadelphia and the Virginia Aces from Salem, Virginia. The games were for the most part extremely competitive and played in excellent weather conditions. The folks at Lyons did a great job with the field maintenance and the concession stand was second to none. We look forward to continuing the league in a couple of weeks beginning on July 8 through July 10 when the second round of play continues.

Player Looking for a Team

My name is Matt Daley and I was on the board for a Mens Fastpitch league in Penndel PA which unfortunately has been left without a field. I am trying to find out if anyone knows of any weeknight leagues in the area that would be looking for a player. I am willing to travel somewhat far as I live in Ambler, PA with easy access to 309 and the turnpike. I am going to be playing in a few tournaments but really would like to find somewhere during the week even if it is just to fill in for missing players.

I am 28 years old and have played fastpitch since I was 18. I even ran my own team in our league for about 5 years but ended up combining with my fathers team more recently.

Mid-Atlantic Fast-pitch Travel League

The Mid-Atlantic Fast-pitch Travel League would like to welcome all fans, teams, and participants to our 2011 season. The MAFTL is proud to host the premier fast-pitch league on the east coast. The league is open to all teams interested in competing among the best teams in the sport in the North Eastern US and Eastern Canada.
The league will play host to three weekends. The weekends will be located in Willow Street, PA (May 21st, 22nd), Elkland, PA (June 18th, 19th) and in Stevens/Ephrata on (July 9th, 10th). The league is excited to welcomes some new faces to the league this year and to have a number of teams returning from last year’s league. We will be introducing a new format that is flexible to all the teams’ needs and situations by starting with the option to be able to select which weekends and how many weekends they would like to participate, enabling teams to play within their budgets. The cost will be approximately $450 dollars for each weekend played. There will a monetary payout each weekend to the top finishers and a Bid to the 2011 ISC World Championships in the Quad Cities for the 1st place team in the first two weekends.
At this time we have numerous teams committed to play two weekends and many more verbally committed to play at least one weekend. We are still looking and accepting teams to be part of our league. Any teams interested in playing in the MAFTL please contact one of the league officers. League officer info can be found at www.maftl.org
We hope the new format will help encourage teams not familiar with the travel league to experience it for one weekend and consider joining fully in the future. The very success of the league and fast-pitch in general hangs in the balance of keeping and maintaining a viable league (MAFTL) in our area. Please be part of the solution in keeping this great game of fast-pitch alive and consider entering your team in one or more of the three weekends. Big Johns of Lackawanna are the 2010 Elkland ESA II level first weekend champions. Behind the pitching and hitting of Gregg Garrity Big Johns defeated the pa power 6 to 1 in the championship game Sunday night. we had a great crowd of people on hand to watch some very good competition all weekend long.My apologies for not getting the scores out over the weekend but we have no Internet at the ballpark and games got behind schedule so I got home a little late both nights.

The Elkland softball associations 9th annual early bird round robin had some great competition all day long as the NY Bombers captured the title in 80 degree weather. The International Softball Federation is the international governing body for the sport of softball. The ISF is a non-profit corporation recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the General Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF).

The ISF organizes and conducts world championship competition in women's & men's fast pitch, junior women's & junior men's fast pitch (19-and-under), women's, men's & coed slow pitch, and women's & men's modified pitch. The ISF sanctions regional championships and provides technical support to Regional (Multi-Sport) Games. Additionally the ISF qualifies teams for Olympic softball competition in coordination with the IOC. The ISF provides the official playing rules for international competition including but not limited to; Olympic Games, world championships, regional championships, regional Games and other sanctioned competitions.

The ISF considers some dependent territories, such as the British Virgin Islands, to be "countries" for the purposes of international competition. Those dependent territories compete separately from their "parent" country. There are members from every continent in the world, except Antarctica.

Players, coaches, umpires, and administrators (plus individuals in the Meritorious Service category) have been being elected to the ISF Hall of Fame since 1981. Individuals can only be nominated by the national governing body for softball in their country, and are considered by the ISF Hall of Fame Commission every other year (on the odd year) at the ISF Congress. Planning is ongoing for an ISF Hall of Fame & Museum to be erected at the world headquarters complex in Plant City, Florida, USA.

A-B-C ASA Nationals

As usual the ASA has failed to put out an information on this years A, B & C National tournaments. As they failed to do for the ASA youth tournaments. Each had a web site that if ran correctly would given all fans information that would have been enjoyable for all. The host committees are supposed to be responsible for running their web sites. The South Bend IN Committee did a good job with their site. I had thought that Decatur IL would have done something. They had a web site that was set up to give not only scores but statistics. Could have been a great site but they failed to do anything with it. NAFA also failed miserably with their reports. Brackets are nice but fans and participants would like more. I wonder why we in the States do not get the web site thing for fastball. The folks in Canada seem to get it. Their National Tournament for Men had a good site. The Nationals for midget and junior boys had great web sites. Even the 4 league that I follow up there have great web sites and they use them although they are slower arould playoff time. They even for the most part put in box scores for each game and they play up to 100 plus league games a year.The ISC has a great coverage on Their website for both The World Tournament and the ISC II Tournament of Champions if all these folks can do it year after year why can't ASA and NAFA. Good tournaments and the players that play in them deserve much better coverage. The Host committee in Midland MI next years ISC events has already opened their web site and what I have seen so far say it will be a great one. If your team played in any of the 3 ASA events please post your results with winning and losing pitchers and maybe some high lights. I would love to get the results with Pitchers for the youth tournaments both ASA and NAFA. If you had a team in any of the youth tournaments please email me your results with pitchers. I follow and keep track of teams and winning and losing pitchers for as many events as get reported or use their web sites so far this tear I have 63 tournaments, 4 leagues and around 2000 games. A few missed some pitchers but not many.I hope ASA and NAFA get it next year and put out some information. Gary

Drifton complex

In 1975, Jake Kislan became a Commissioner for the AMATEUR SOFTBALL ASSOC. OF PA. The game of slow pitch softball became a popular game for adult men and women to play.
The teams grew in number and there were no fields available for them to compete on.
In 1978 Commissioner Jake Kislan, bought 20 acres of land in Drifton, PA., with the backing of State Commissioner Andrew S. Loechner, now Sectary General of the Olympics softball program.
Jake bought land that previously was the state gardens owned by the Coxes family.
This land had an abundance of top soil which was distributed on the fields in order to grow grass.
Mr. Loechner Persuaded the National Guard General to have the Hazleton Co. “C” Engineers to do the job of leveling the site. The job began on Nov 4th, 1978
The ASA OF PA. paid for the fuel that was used.
In Return, the soldiers of Company C. learned the trade of driving heavy duty equipment.
Jake appealed to local area business to ask for help from their companies.
The Barletta family donated an estimated $250,000.00 in materials, such as 800 yards of cement, thousands of tons of stone, equipment, all free of charge.

Joe Larock, of Valley Seeding Co., provided, free of charge, all 4 fields with seeding of grass.
Fritz Matinelli and Pagnotti Coal Co. donated both equipment and men to the project.
Tony Matz, Frank Aiello, and Bart Gongware donated their free time in wiring the four fields with Musto Lighting as the project director.
Maurice Molinaro of Star Cleaners also donated his services
Pete Haentjens, of Barrett- Haentjens donated 1000 ft of water pipe.
Genova Co. donated the entire quota of plastic pipe for the building.
Gene Bodgan, president of the Peoples Bank in Hazleton , funded the project with a loan of $500.000.00 .
The loan was paid off in 10 years.
In August of 1982 the complex doors were open and the first State tournament was played.
In Sept of 2005 the complex was re-dedicated the “ASA OF PA. Jake Kislan Softball Complex.”
Some historic events follow:
1988- Ramaz Goglidze, President of the USSR Baseball and Softball Federation and Prime Minister of Sports in the Province of Georgia, visited the complex. The Georgia Province produced 80 percent of the Soviet winners in the Olympic Games. As he was departing Drifton, Goglidze said that his goal was to build a similar complex in Georgia.
1990- Gov. Robert Casey visited the complex and was greeted by a large contingent of union officials , members and their families, in addition to numerous softball fans.
1994, Jake Kislan was asked by Andy Loechner , sect general of the USA Olympic committee to help get the game of softball started in the country of Poland. Jake raised over $80,000 of softball equipment that was sent to the softball officials of Poland. This was done with the help of the Greater Hazleton area Polonaise Society.
1996- US Olympic Girls Softball Team played four games in June , just prior to the 1996 Summer Olympics held in Atlanta. This very team went on to capture a gold medal. This sporting spectacle proved to be the greatest sporting event ever held in the Greater Hazleton Area.

2000- US Olympic Girls Softball Team played two games in June , just prior to the 2000 Summer Olympics held in Australia. The team again went on to capture a gold medal. Once again, this sporting spectacle proved to be one of the greatest sporting events ever held in the Greater Hazleton Area.

· Luzerne County Commissioners granted the A S A 0f Pa. Jake Kislan Softball Complex a $750,000 Grant.
First Federal Charitable Foundation donated a $10,000.00 Grant
Governor Ed Rendell also provided a $150,000 Grant to the A S A 0f Pa. Jake Kislan Softball Complex
Jake Kislan, Vice President, stated that the money will be used for new field lighting, new fencing, new scoreboards, new building, up grating infields and parking lot.
Pete Andrasko is the appointed Complex Director
Andy Loechner A S A State Commissioner and ISF Secretary General stated that that the Drifton Complex will again host A S A championship tournaments and the Complex will also host teams from Europe. He stated that the Polish and Italian national teams will appear at the complex. He stated that ISF clinics will also be held at the complex.

The Magic Age of 33

Today's topic is actually an age -- 33 years old. Many years ago, Stan Musial set a baseball player's prime from age 28 to 32. And even though this isn't 100 percent true*, there is truth in it. For many good-to-great players, 33 is the age when they begin to grow old. Maybe the bat slows a touch. Maybe nagging injuries nag more. Maybe the legs lose a little bit of their spring. Maybe the shoulder aches when they try to throw home.
*Bill famously debunked that prime years ago; he showed that a player's prime is quite a bit younger than that -- roughly from age 26 to 30. He says the numbers has moved some through the years, but the descent certainly begins before 32.
Whatever changes, 33 is an age when many players find that they can no longer do the things they once did. Right off, we should say: This isn't true of all players and not even most players (and we are talking every-day players here, not pitchers). Bill figures that about 70 percent of players perform about the same at age 33 as they did at age 32.
But, he also figures that more players -- and especially more GREAT players -- find 33 to be their most punishing season, the year that long fly balls stop leaving the park, the year that groundballs stop rolling through the infield, the year the bat feels heavy in July and August.

June 23, 2009 - With upsets and unexpected victories in several tournaments the past three weeks, the ISC II rankings have a new team on top as Waterdown Hammer edged out Ashland Stock Pack for the top spot.With their win in the Ottawa qualifier, Ottawa Team Easton jumped up to #3 while Port Elgin Blue Devils climbed from #11 to #4 on the strength of their second place finish at the Innerkip qualifier. Making the biggest jump, from #27 to #5, is the winner in Innerkip: K-W Cubs.

We were able to get all the games in despite the weather. Games were shortened to 5 innings on Saturday and we didn't get off the field until 1:30 am Sunday morning. Sunday's 5 play-off games were played regulation, with the NY Gremlims defeating Keatings 6-2 in the Championship game. The real wiiner of the weekend was the Garrett Park ground crew as they worked effectively dealing with what Mother Nature dumped on us. As soon as I recover from the weekends effects, the website will be updated with all games and highlights.

This Guy Can Rise It, Drop It And Pop It At 104 Mph
Pennsylvania Dutchman Ty Stofflet, softball pitcher extraordinary, would be famous were he not the modest Prince of the Front Porch

Ballietsville, Pa. (population estimated at 600) is blessed with two of the best, the Ballietsville Inn and Ty Stofflet. The inn claims to serve the finest medallions of veal baloise this side of Switzerland and may be the best restaurant in its corner of the world. Tyrone Earl Stofflet, the lefthanded softball pitcher, is the best at his calling in any corner of the world. And that's not one of those Pennsylvania Dutch tall tales out of the lush valleys of Lehigh County in the eastern part of the state, where Ballietsvilleans have been planting corn and potatoes for the last 250 years. As a matter of fact, Ty Stofflet is perhaps least appreciated down home. Joseph Hartmann, owner of the Ballietsville Inn, has never even heard of Stofflet, who lives just half a mile down the road. (Likewise, Stofflet, a man of simple tastes, has never stopped in to sample Hartmann's medallions of veal, baloise or otherwise.)
No, Stofflet has earned the designation of world's best out on the proving grounds of fast-pitch softball—places like Leesport, Pa.; Aurora, Ill.; Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; Springfield, Mo.; Vancouver, British Columbia; and Auckland, New Zealand. There, Stofflet has met—and almost always beaten—the best. They know him in those places.
Stofflet, 37, is at long last ready, albeit reluctantly, to accept the designation himself. For several years now he has been advertised as "The World's Greatest Lefthanded Softball Pitcher," as if on Judgment Day the righties and lefties will be herded into different corrals. But the job of any pitcher is to get people out, something Stofflet does better than anyone else, righthanded or lefthanded.
"Over the years I've never said too much about it," he said at the end of last season. "I've never said nothing, in fact. I figured I'd let my arm do the talking. But after this year, I feel different, know what I mean? If they can't understand this year and what I've done, they don't understand nothing."

Once thriving sport of fastpitch softball now thing of past at Prescott Field

PRESCOTT — It wasn’t all that many years ago when it would have been unthinkable. Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start of summer, had arrived, and Prescott Field was dormant.
Once, not that long ago, Prescott Field was one of the most-used facilities in Lebanon County.
Prescott Field is still used, but not to the extent that it used to be. Men’s fastpitch softball, the sport that once dominated Lebanon County’s summers, has effectively ceased to exist. The last holdout, South Lebanon TNT, disbanded shortly after last year’s ISC II tournament in Wisconsin.
The decision to disband the team was made by Irv Lutz, the team’s general manager and the man who had been fighting against the odds for the better part of a decade to keep fastpitch going. Some serious health concerns, and a handful of other factors, led to the decision.
“I always thought I couldn’t live without softball,” Lutz said, “but when I ended up getting ill and finding out that my health was important, I thought it would be a tough thing this year not having a team, but I’m living with it.”
Lutz began having difficulties in 2005. Forced to go on dialysis because of kidney problems, he developed a back infection that led to two major surgeries. There were some additional problems, as well, and Lutz found himself hospitalized with uncomfortable frequency.
“I was a person that was always on the go, and now I have to depend on people to help me,” he said. “If it wouldn’t be for my wife and two boys... They’ve been the Rock of Gibraltar for me.”
The health problems simply exacerbated other problems.
“My brother Lee, he was a big help as far as the coaching went,” said Lutz, “and after we won the championship in 2007, he said he’d commit to one more year. He decided to get out of coaching.”
There was also the fundraising. Although he was quick to credit Leonard Tobias of TNT, the team’s sponsor, for his financial support, Lutz noted that the team still had to raise additional funds, and that task fell to his wife, Deb.
“It just became too much,” he said.
Still, it wasn’t without regret that Lutz decided to call it quits, especially in looking back on the Lebanon County’s fastpitch history.
“In the late 1960s and 1970s, and into the 1980s, either here (at Prescott) or at Stoevers, that was the hotbed of softball in this area,” he said. “The City-County League, games would be on the radio, and you’d come here for a game, and there would be 1,000 people sometimes. There were a lot of good players in this league. It was very competitive.”
The biggest competition was between South Lebanon — sponsored by Country House, then Wet Your Whistle, and finally TNT — and Jolly Molly.
“That rivalry went back for years and years,” said Lutz. “Today I have a lot of friends from Jolly Molly, but back then when you stepped on the field, you weren’t friends. The fans could see that competitiveness. They had a lot of good players over the years, and we had a lot of good players over the years. After the ’80s, when they got out of it, that was the demise of softball. That really hurt because you didn’t have the tournaments we used to have.”
The success of those two teams had a ripple effect.
“There was a softball tournament almost every weekend in Lebanon County,” said Lutz. “Lebanon was known for its softball. When you said Jolly Molly or Country House, everybody in the state knew where you were from. As far as the economy around here, people don’t realize how much it hurt the economy. All the tournaments we had, we always hurt for hotels, but we’d have 30-team tournaments back in the ’70s and ’80s.”
The success of South Lebanon and Jolly Molly also raised the level of play for other teams in the old City-County League.
“Teams like Strickler’s Insurance, Risser’s, Lauck’s, they all wanted to beat us,” said Lutz, “and they did sometimes. The league was competitive. We had A, B and C. We had a C league, and we had the Industrial League. Some of those guys played in both leagues.”
It was, said Lutz, men like his brother Hal, who died in 1997; the late Ray Brown, the man behind Jolly Molly; and Ron Weidman who played a major role in making the game what it was.
“When you have a leader like Ray Brown was, he was a big booster of softball around here, like my brother Hal was, you’ve got to give him credit,” Lutz said. “Like Ron Weidman. Those guys were the reason softball was the way it was. Ray Brown, Hal Lutz, Ron Weidman, when they got out of it, that really took a toll.”
And the game, in Lebanon County, may not recover.
“I prayed and hoped (fastpitch) would make a comeback,” Lutz said, “but there’s just so many things now. I don’t see it coming back unless you get leaders like Ray and Ron and Hal. They just put things together, and unless people come to the front, it’s not gonna happen.”

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the retirement of Tom Vogel. Tom gave everything he had to the creation of The Rise; he will be sorely missed for his leadership, passion, knowledge for the game and performance on the diamond. Tom will continue as the President of the MAFTL and will undoubtedly remain involved with the game he loves so much. Why aren’t mens sports groups lobbying for Men’s Softball at the Olympics?
While perusing the internet for men’s fastpitch news today, I ran across an article entitled:
“Why aren’t women sports groups lobbying for a return of softball at the Olympics?”by Evan Weiner, Business of Sports Examiner.
Evan Weiner, a New York City-based journalist and speaker, is recognized as a global expert on the business of sports as well as emerging technologies such as broadband. He is also the author of the book, “The Business & Politics of Sports: A Collection of Columns by Evan Weiner“
It struck me that we could — and should — be asking the same question about the men’s game. I started writing a quick email response to the author of the article, and, as is often the case, wound up with something that was anything but “brief”. So in the end, I decided to share it with readers, here at the Morning Brief.My letter to Mr. Weiner, at Business of Sports Examiner:
Mr. Evan Weiner,
I read your article today, “Why aren’t women sports groups lobbying for a return of softball at the Olympics?” and had a few thoughts I thought I would share with you. By way of background, I host a website providing coverage to Men’s Fastpitch softball, www.fastpitchwest.com and a companion site that provides internet radio broadcasts for their games, www.ballparkradio.com
The answer to the question posed in your article is that there is a well focused effort on the part of women’s sports to restore softball to the Olympics, via the ISF (International Softball Federation): http://www.internationalsoftball.com/backsoftball/index.html (www.Backsoftball.com)

That said, a word about MEN’S fastpitch softball:
A reaction I often get when talking about men’s fastpitch is “Oh, do men play fastpitch softball too?”. The answer is, yes, of course, with a long history dating back decades, including the 1950’s and 1960’s when it was in its heyday.
The closest thing the men’s game comes to the “Olympics” is the once-every-four-years World Championships. The next competition is slated for this summer in Saskatoon, Canada, with 16 countries participating. http://www.2009worldsmensfastpitch.com/index.php
This competition comes on the heels of the “junior” Olympic-style competition for 19 and under boys, hosted by the ISF in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada this past summer, an event that I had the privilege to attend and broadcast via internet radio. Twelve countries competed, including three from North America, two from South America, two from Europe, two from Oceania, two from Africa, and one from the Far East.
While the advent of the women’s faspitch programs, both collegiate and Olympic has been great for the game of softball, and certainly women’s softball, the sport men’s fastpitch remains something of a red-headed stepchild.
Baseball is obviously more popular, and widespread, especially here in the U.S. From what I read, the doping problems are a big part of why baseball is not an Olympic sport. I note that the ISF separated their efforts to get women’s softball back in the Olympics from the groups pushing baseball. I think you can draw your own conclusions about why that happened, but it is noteworthy that the “Backsoftball” group is emphasizing the fact that women’s softball does not have drug use issues (like baseball).
Your article points up a number of problems that baseball has in getting back in the Olympics, including scheduling problems in the middle of the MLB season.
I would argue that the Olympics should reinstate women’s softball, for many of the cogent reasons listed on the BackSoftball website. But I would take it a step further and suggest that BOTH men’s and women’s fastpitch should be in the Olympics.
First, men’s fastpitch is an amateur sport, in the truest sense of the word, and better suited for Olympic competition. Second, and maybe the most pragmatic reason — the venue question. It is my understanding that one of the reasons that baseball was dropped, is that not all countries have a large baseball stadium in which to host Olympic baseball. Certainly, that is not a problem for cities like Chicago, hosting here in the U.S. But we have only one vote with regard to the restoration of softball as an Olympic sport. (a vote which, ironically, wasn’t even cast last time around when the sport was eliminated, due to a perceived conflict of interest by the member holding that vote). However, the venue cost factor looms large for other countries outside the US, and one that mitigates against having baseball as an Olympic sport. The cost of building a softball facility for men AND women jointly is far less than a baseball stadium.
Not so with men’s fastpitch - the venue required is smaller, and much less expensive. The men and women’s games are very similar, and could be played at the same facilities, simply moving the base stakes back a few feet, along with the outfield fencing, which is usually the portable “safety fences” at most locations anyway.
Your article makes a good point that the Olympic committee wants “stars” to participate, if baseball is to be an Olympic sport. But that is not happening in the present state of affairs with Major League Baseball unwilling to disrupt its schedule in the summer months. If you think about it, baseball as a sport has taken a different direction, via the World Baseball Classic , that provides for worldwide competition on a larger scale than it would in the Olympics, with the World Baseball Classic. http://web.worldbaseballclassic.com/index.jsp
I would answer the question posed in your article by noting that there are women’s sports groups lobbying — in a very profession, organized fashion — for the return of softball at the Olympics, for women, most notably the ISF and the women’s Olympic teams and players who have competed in the sport to date.
But I would pose a question of my own — Why aren’t men’s sports groups lobbying to introduce MEN’S fastpitch softball as an Olympic sport?
We may not have the star power of baseball, but from the standpoint of the Olympic movement and ideals, we also don’t have the steroid problems that come along with someone like Alex Rodriguez. What we do have is a tremendously exciting sports played by amateurs in the true Olympic tradition, who play the game for love of the sport, and the thrill of competition.
Al Doran, of Alsfastball.com will tell you that his email list for Men’s fastpitch news has grown into the thousands, and all without the benefit of major media exposure. Those who have discovered the sport have become its biggest advocates.
The men’s fastpitch softball players from 16 countries who will compete in the ISF World Championships this summer in Saskatoon are largely unknown to sports fans outside the fastpitch community itself, seen by some as a “niche” sport. But that can be said of many sports that currently enjoy the opportunity of the Olympic showcase. Every Olympiad reveals to the sporting world unheralded athletes who rise to the occasion, and become known the the rest of the world when they step up onto that medal stand. The list of Olympic athletes toiling in relative obscurity is legion - but so is the list of athletes who have risen about that obscurity because of the spotlight of Olympic competition. Countless times we have seen that story showcased in pieces by Jim McKay, Bob Costas or shows like HBO’s Real Sports.
There are Olympic caliber athletes in men’s fasptitch softball competing right now, and deserving of that opportunity to compete for Olympic medals, as are the women of the sport.
The excitement and high level competition of men’s fastpitch is, to much of the world, a well kept secret. I invite you to let it out.

This video was shot during the 2009 AAU International Tournament title game between the Chicago/NY Dominicana team from the Dominican Republic, and the Midwest Stampede, of Iowa. Most valuable pitcherRob O’Brien is at the plate, his team leading 3-0. He hit a three run homer, breaking the game open, and staking his team to a 6-0 lead. They would go on the win the game, 9-0, and capture the 2009 AAU International Tournament crown. The Dominican Republic won the very first AAU title, back in 2000 when there were just eight teams. This year’s field of teams grew to a record forty (40).
The video was shot with a HD “Flip video” camera, that is about the size of a small cell phone. The quality at YouTube is very average, but the quality of the original is remarkable. YouTube had added a “view high quality” setting, which I was using on my Fastpitchwest channel at YouTube, but that option does not appear to be available this evening. A troika of ISC II teams will be featured on the opening night Ballpark Radio broadcasts from the AAU tournament in Florida this weekend, headlined by the New York Gremlin Knights, likely to be the top-ranked ISC II team heading into the 2009 season.

Joining the Knights on Ballpark Radio are ToC hopefuls Staten Island, NY ADCO/Tool Shed and Manor, TX Dirt Bags.

On the microphones will be Jim Flanagan and Kyle Smith with Bill Hillhouse doing double duty, pitching for the Gremlin Knights and providing commentary in the booth.
